Time for another instalment of "Things I like" from the NGV in Melbourne. Today I want to show you artworks I chose to photograph because I liked the emotion triggered by the character or the story. There were several characters (including the one above) which just made me laugh. Their expressions are so happy and childlike.
These sausage men are hilarious!
Some of the characters give a more sinister feeling.
There were various unhappy souls including Picasso's Weeping Woman.
Many of my favourite characters were appealing to me because of their simple childlike or tribal qualities.
I liked this guy's long neck and elongated figure.
This one attracted me because of the unusual pose which necessitated several plinths to support it.
I'm not usually interested in what I would call "boring old paintings" but these two seemed to depict interesting stories. The first shows a pioneer arriving in the Australian bush, the next scene shows a house has been built and a child born, the last scene depicts the man alone tending a grave - whose?- we don't know.
There seems to be a story in this sculpture of a group of people fighting.
This was one of the strangest sculptures that told a story. We heard it from several rooms away before we saw it. This is just a section of a large building. Voices of children cry out from inside, "Help me....Please". The stuff of nightmares!
