Here are some more of my favourite images from the NGV. I chose to photograph these artworks for their pattern and texture. The Aboriginal works at the NGV Australia are particularly strong on pattern.
This one had a great texture too where the thick top layer of paint had been scraped off to reveal the colour underneath.
I loved the vibrant colours used in these examples. A change from the usual earth tones.
This is a small part of a large piece which had an unusual texture in the centre made by covering the paper in wax. I thought it was a missed opportunity to make the long grey marks in the top section with paint. Stitches would have been awesome.
These pieces had lots of angular patterns in them and when you looked carefully another image was revealed.
This oil painting had great texture made with very thick paint.
This painting really looked like a piece of textured wood.
Patterns were abundant on this dress.
I liked the pattern on this frame more than the painting within.
This piece had great texture on the fields which could easily be reproduced in stitch. It was a shame it was mounted so high as to make it difficult to see. I don't like the blue "sun" though.
Patterns were everywhere from contemporary to tribal pieces.
I'm sure you'll soon see some of these patterns cropping up in my artwork
